From TikTok not being able to get over made up drama between Hailey Bieber and Selena Gomez to the investigative journalism done by Rolling Stone’s Cheyenne Roundtree into the anti-feminist creators of the idol and euphoria, this week in pop culture has been exhausting.
What started as a few TikTok creators “reporting” on celebrity postings, turned into an all-out war on Hailey Bieber. TikTok girlies are posting their boyfriends following Selena Gomez, Twitter is full of “team selena” tweets, and TikTok seems set on painting Hailey Bieber as psychotic. If you haven’t been paying attention, all of this is drama that doesn’t need to be drama – yet the internet can’t seem to let go of the fact that Hailey and Justin Bieber have been married for four years. Why are we all so obsessed with cat fights?
This week Rolling Stone reported that Sam Levison and co-creator The Weeknd changed the plot of HBO’s The Idol from a feminist narrative of a female pop idol grappling with fame and misogyny into an out-right abuse fantasy. Several actresses have already spoken out about Levinson’s desire to capture abuse and nudity on camera for Euphoria. It’s pretty clear where Hollywood stands on respecting women.
