Getting Candid with The Vices [INTERVIEW]

We’re getting candid in our interview with The Vices.

We talk to The Vices about the importance of performing live and learning how to replicate that energy in the studio, how they’ve drawn influence from rock bands across the decades, and their decision to sing in English. Plus, we talk about how they recorded a live performance of their debut album on boat during covid, and how they built their own music festival with bands from around the world.

The Vices are a four-piece rock band from The Netherlands formed in 2019. Their second album ‘Unknown Affairs’, early 2023, and reached over 1.5M streams within a month. Their very first show ever was supporting YUNGBLUD. They’ve since toured with Nothing But Thieves, opened stadium shows in Europe, and hosted their own festival called Vice Fest.

Name 3 Songs: We are here in New York at Baby’s Alright with the Vices. Y’all just performed at SXSW in Austin, Texas. This was a few weeks ago. You’ve since been running around the US in New York tonight. You have a few more tour dates after this. How’s it been for you guys?

The Vices: It’s been really cool. This is our first US tour ever. We went to New York and Austin before, but this is the first time that we’re doing a headline show. These are all places where we’ve never been. We’ve never seen them and it’s sick to see people show up everywhere. It’s sick to see all the surroundings and all the there is one crazy guy every day, right? Every day.

And I noticed that for most of these shows you’ve had local bands playing support for you guys. Was that like something that you had thought of beforehand or just something that happened by luck?

No, we wanted to do that and we asked. So the promoter who organized the tour and all the local promoters and the agents who organized the tour – they sent us all kinds of different bands from all the cities.

So you got to pick and choose a little bit.

Yeah, we have been driving a car during our European tours. We’ve just been listening to a lot of bands. We could choose them. That was cool.

Have you gotten to speak to and get to know these bands at all?

Yeah, of course. Everyone. Yeah.

So do you feel like there’s been an aspect of cultural exchange?

Oh, yeah, we keep a list with so many people that we met. There’s so much. I mean, I feel like it’s a fun way to come to America to be able to tour, but also to make friends along the way and meet new people and do beyond just a tour, you know?

When we played in San Francisco, there was a band called Milk for the Angry. You can also learn a lot from different bands. Like that was a band that I thought really fit in the West Coast area. And the way he played the guitar, I didn’t see that really live. So I learned a lot from them and that was cool.
