We’re Getting Candid with SPIDER about how she’s using music as an outlet for expression but also to get out her feminist rage, how more POC and female voices are taking over alternative music, and how growing up in fandom left an impact on how SPIDER operates as an artist.
SPIDER is a London-based artist making a name for herself with loud feminist punk and alternative music. Her new EP an object of desire dropped February 23rd.

Name 3 Songs: We all have these key moments in our relationship to music that inform who we are as people. So is there a moment where you felt like “I have to be doing music”?
SPIDER: Definitely and I will just say Tumblr. Obviously, music has always existed. But I think there’s a difference between music always being there and music being an actual force in your life. And I think when I actually found Tumblr and the “Tumblr artists” of our era – Halsey, Marina and the Diamonds, Lana Del Rey, Five Seconds of Summer, One Direction. When I found fandom culture, something in my head clicked with music. And I was like, I wanna be a part of whatever this is.
So cool. Did that make you want to go out of your way to teach yourself how to make music? Or were you already laying that foundation down beforehand without realizing you wanted to do music?
I was definitely laying down the foundations for that. I don’t come from a very creative family, but I think I’ve always just kind of gravitated towards stuff like that anyway. So by the time I found my beloved Tumblr artists, I was already starting to write little songs.
But I remember one really pivotal moment for me was finding Halsey’s first album, Badlands, because I’m from Ireland and at the time around 2014 all the music on the radio was very much just white boys and acoustic guitars. You know, the genre of pained white boys singing about heartbreak.
We just had so much of that and then I heard Halsey and the production in it was so… I just remember listening to it being like, that’s not an acoustic guitar and I don’t know what that is, but how did they do that? And I was obsessed with every sound I was hearing because it wasn’t anything, it wasn’t real instruments. And I loved that. And that’s when I really sunk my teeth into it. And I was like, yeah, I need to teach myself how to produce.
